But it is already possible to feel the change in temperature in November, as we leave October with the highest temperature at 88ºF to 74ºF in the following month. And there’s no better way to say goodbye to the hot days than to talk about one of the best ways of cooling yourself during high temperatures. Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite, ice cream.

History

Having records of its existence since B.C., in the beginning, this dessert was more similar to a slushy. That’s because it was made of snow and ice. People said that Alexander The Great liked to have his snow snack with honey whereas Nero Claudius Caesar would have it with fruits and juices.

It was only with Marco Polo’s return to Italy that we had a recipe including dairy products. This recipe was more similar to what we call today a sherbet. It was only around the 16th century that the recipe would evolve into what we now understand as the frozen dessert. And, as the IDFA mentions, a lot of places had similar ideas at almost the same time. So in parallel to Italy, England also had their own “cream ice” recipe, for example. However, although the recipes for frozen desserts were being created or arriving in European countries by the 16th century, it was only in the 17th century that these recipes became available to the general public.

The Sweet American Dream

It was around 1744 that the first reference to the dessert appeared in a letter. But only some decades later it was possible to find advertisements related to the product. It was in the New York Gazette and it said the ice cream was available almost every day in confectioner Philip Lenzi’s establishment. In 1813 it was the chosen dessert of the White House’s inaugural banquet.

Up until 1800, the creamy sweet treat was a rare and exotic delicacy that was primarily consumed by wealthy and influential people. Ice houses with insulation appeared around 1800. America quickly developed an industry for making ice cream, started in 1851 by milk merchant Jacob Fussell in Baltimore. When it came to providing the dessert to its troops, each branch of the military competed with the others. For sailors in the western Pacific, the first “floating ice cream parlor” was constructed in 1945. Americans consumed ice cream to commemorate its victory after the war when dairy product rationing ended. To illustrate, in 1946, each American ate more than 20 quarts of ice cream.

Technology advancements led to a rise in ice cream production. The United States now produces more than 6.4 billion pounds of frozen dairy annually as a result of the continued advancements of these technologies.

Ice Cream Funny Flavors

If you are a proper ice cream fan, you probably have tried more than the classic flavors.
